Shanhaiguan Day Trip: Laolongtou, First Pass and Old Town
Shanhaiguan is the Qinhuangdao day trip that deserves its own plan. Beidaihe is about coast and rest; Shanhaiguan is about the Great Wall meeting the sea, fortress history, old-town gates, and the famous First Pass Under Heaven. A focused route should connect Laolongtou, the First Pass, and the old town without turning the day into a rushed checklist.
This article builds on the broader Qinhuangdao guide and Beidaihe to Shanhaiguan itinerary, but narrows the search intent to Shanhaiguan itself.

Quick Planning Snapshot
- Best for: Great Wall history, coastal-wall scenery, old gates, photography, and Qinhuangdao heritage.
- Best bases: Qinhuangdao, Beidaihe, or Shanhaiguan itself.
- Time needed: one full day if you include Laolongtou, First Pass, and old-town walking.
- Before going: verify ticket combinations, current opening hours, weather, and local transfer time.

How to Structure the Day
Most travelers should not start by wandering randomly through the old town. Decide first whether Laolongtou or the First Pass is the priority. Laolongtou gives the symbolic point where the wall reaches the Bohai Sea, while the First Pass gives the fortress-gate identity that made Shanhaiguan famous. If you have only half a day, choose one. If you have a full day, do both and keep the old town as the connective layer.
From Beidaihe or Qinhuangdao, local transport is usually manageable, but holiday traffic and summer beach-season movement can slow the route. From Beijing, Shanhaiguan is possible only with careful train timing and a realistic return plan. For most foreign travelers, it is better to stay overnight in Qinhuangdao or Beidaihe and make Shanhaiguan the main heritage day.

Suggested One-Day Route
- Morning: start at Laolongtou if coastal light and weather are good, or at First Pass if you want the old-town core first.
- Midday: eat simply near the old-town or station area rather than crossing Qinhuangdao for a meal.
- Afternoon: visit the second major stop, then walk the old-town streets with enough time for photos and signs.
- Evening: return to Beidaihe, Qinhuangdao city, or your hotel before transport gets thin.
Who Should Choose Shanhaiguan?
Choose Shanhaiguan if you want Great Wall history with a coastal setting. Choose Beidaihe if your priority is beach time. Choose Jinshanling if you want heavier hiking. Shanhaiguan is best for travelers who want walls, gates, sea, and a compact heritage story in one Qinhuangdao-based day.
Laolongtou or First Pass First?
If the weather is clear, Laolongtou is usually strongest early or late because the coastal setting depends on light and visibility. If you are more interested in architecture, old-town gates, and the famous inscription, start at the First Pass and let Laolongtou become the scenic second half. In peak summer, avoid assuming that beach-area traffic and scenic-area traffic will be fast just because the map distance looks short.
The First Pass is the better anchor for history. Laolongtou is the better anchor for symbolism: the Wall meeting the sea. A strong Shanhaiguan article should explain both, because many travelers only know the name from a larger Qinhuangdao or Great Wall route and do not understand why the district deserves a separate day.
Practical Visitor Notes
Save the Chinese names 山海关, 老龙头, and 天下第一关 before you leave your hotel. Carry a passport, especially if buying tickets at formal scenic sites, and keep screenshots of train times or ride-hailing destinations. English signs may be limited, but the route is visually clear once you understand the order: coastal wall, pass city, old-town streets, then return.
Do not overpack the day with Beidaihe beach time, Qinhuangdao seafood, and every wall-related stop. That creates a shallow itinerary. A better plan is one heritage-heavy Shanhaiguan day, then a separate coast or seafood day if you stay overnight. This also creates cleaner internal linking: Qinhuangdao for the city/coast overview, Beidaihe for beach planning, and Shanhaiguan for the Great Wall heritage cluster.
